Hadrian's Library

3 Areos, Athens, Greece, 10555

One of the most spectacular Roman ruins in Athens, Hadrian’s Library draws travelers who want to delve into the city’s ancient history beyond the Acropolis. Take in the restored western wall and other surviving fragments of this massive 2nd-century cultural center that was once lined by 100 columns and contained a library, lecture halls, and exhibition spaces.

The basics

Admission to Hadrian’s Library is included in the “Athena’s Combined Ticket,” which is valid for entry to seven of the top ancient sites in the city over five days. Many guided tours of Athens’ archaeological treasures stop at Hadrian’s Library—as well as the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Kerameikos, and the Roman Agora. Choose a tour with transportation included to cover more sites in a single day, or opt for an e-bike excursion to bypass the city’s famously snarled traffic.

Things to know before you go

  • Like most of the ancient ruins in Athens, Hadrian’s Library has little shade, so wear plenty of sunscreen and a hat when visiting in the summer.

  • Food and drink are not allowed inside the ruins, but the surrounding area is thick with eateries for before or after your visit.

  • Photography is allowed inside the site, and the remaining columns make for striking photos.

  • There is little signage explaining the site for visitors. Explore with a guide or an audio guide to gain a better understanding of the ruins.

  • The site is fully accessible to wheelchairs and strollers via the southern entrance along Dexippou Street.

How to get there

Set at the northern base of the Acropolis, Hadrian’s Library is easy to reach from the Plaka and Monastiraki neighborhoods and other ancient ruins such as the Roman Agora and Ancient Agora. The easiest way to visit is as part of a driving tour of the top ancient sites in Athens, which covers the A-listers without the hassle of navigating the city’s public transportation.

When to get there

Hadrian’s Library is open daily year-round. Due to the lack of shade or shelter from the elements, opt for a clear day and avoid the midday sun. Time your tour for the early morning or late afternoon in the summer.

Visiting Athens with the Athena’s Combined Ticket

To optimize your time in Athens and cover its most popular ancient sites without having to wait in separate ticket lines at each, opt for the Athena’s Combined Ticket. This pass is valid for entry at seven different archaeological ruins over a 5-day period. Entry to the Acropolis & Slopes must be reserved for a specific day and time, but the remaining six sites—Hadrian’s Library, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, Kerameikos, Aristotle’s School (Lyceum), and Olympieion—can be visited at any time on the same day or the following four days.
