POINT OF INTEREST

Honeymoon Island

1 Causeway Blvd., Dunedin, Florida

With 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) of pristine beaches, 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) of trails through virgin slash pine forests, and plentiful wildlife, Honeymoon Island State Park is a quintessential tropical paradise. Once a popular honeymoon destination, today the barrier island is a beloved Florida state park located in Tampa Bay off the coast of Dunedin.

There are numerous activities available for different types of visitors on the island, including swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, fishing, and beachcombing for shells. Land-based options include walking, hiking, and exploring the nature center. There are three beach areas: Main Beach, which offers the most amenities; the dog-friendly Pet Beach; and the quiet North Beach. Visitors can also catch the ferry to Caladesi Island from Honeymoon Island. You can visit independently or as part of an eco-tour by boat.

  • Honeymoon Island is ideal for couples, families, and single travelers.

  • There’s a café and gift shop near the ferry dock.

  • Bicycles, kayaks, beach chairs, and umbrellas can be rented inside the park.

  • Portions of the park are wheelchair accessible, including paved paths and elevated walkways to the beach. Free beach wheelchairs are available.

  • Amenities include restrooms, showers, a playground, and picnic areas with grills.

  • Alcohol is not permitted, though beer and wine are available at the café.

Cyclists can use the causeway near Clearwater Beach or the Pinellas Trail. The island is also accessible by boat, and some boat tours of the area will take you there.

The park is open year-round, from early morning until sundown, with the Rotary Centennial Nature Center closing in the late afternoon. The park is a great spot to watch the sunset, and entrance fees are half-price one hour before sunset. Loggerhead turtles sometimes nest on the beach from May through October.

Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island used to be one island—Hog Island—until a hurricane split it into two in 1921. Accessible only by boat or on foot, Caladesi Island is a protected Florida state park, ranked among America’s best beaches. In addition to the pristine shoreline, visitors will find mangrove forests, calm waters, nature trails, and fantastic shelling.
