Kunsthal Charlottenborg
Nyhavn 2, Copenhagen, Denmark, 1051
Taking a prominent place among the charming old buildings and striking modern architecture of Copenhagen's oldest district, Kunsthal Charlottenborg is one of the city's top cultural destinations. The palace is home to the Royal Danish Academy of Art, which features an extensive collection of contemporary art and regularly hosts special exhibitions.
The basics
Housed in a Dutch-inspired baroque palace in downtown Copenhagen, Kunsthal Charlottenborg was built in the late 17th century for wealthy Copenhagener (and illegitimate son of the King) Frederik Gyldenløve. The palace was bought by the Queen Dowager Charlotte Amalie in 1700 and has carried her name ever since.
The gallery—housed in a separate pavilion built in 1883—features contemporary art exhibits. Famous for its annual Spring Exhibition (held since 1857), the gallery regularly hosts special events, from artist talks to concerts and video screenings. The palace buildings are also home to the Danish Art Library.
Things to know before you go
- Entry to the gallery is via paid ticket.

How to get there
Kunsthal Charlottenborg is located at 2 Nyhavn in downtown Copenhagen. The closest metro station is Kongens Nytorv. Boat tours of the city’s waterways come and go from the docks at Nyhavn, and the gallery is walking distance away from other important sites in town, such as the King’s Square (Kongens Nytorv).
When to get there
The gallery is open every day except Monday, all year round. The most popular time to visit is during the annual Spring Exhibition (held in February-March), which highlights the work of emerging artists.
Take a stroll along Nyhavn
The waterfront district of Nyhavn ("new harbor") is one of Copenhagen’s most popular entertainment zones. At any time, but especially on summer weekends, the bars and cafés along the water are filled with locals and tourists enjoying food and drink with views over the canal.
