Mong Kok
Mong Kok, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
The Mong Kok district in Kowloon is one of the busiest and most densely populated areas in the world. Known for its lively street markets, massive shopping malls, a seemingly endless array of food options, as well as billboards, neon, and people everywhere, it’s also a great place to experience local Hong Kong culture.
The Basics
Shopping and food tend to be the two main reasons why visitors venture into Mong Kok. In addition to high-end malls like Langham Center, Mong Kok is famous for its street markets, such as the Ladies Market, Sneaker Street, Flower Market, Goldfish Market, and Bird Market. Specialized tours tend to cover several markets and help you navigate the labyrinth of stalls in the sprawling markets. Mong Kok is also well known for its food scene, and a street food tour provides a good introduction to local favorites like siu mai, fish balls, and egg waffles. Combine one of these with a sightseeing tour on a hop-on hop-off bus or a Victoria Harbor cruise to get a more comprehensive view of Hong Kong.
Things to Know Before You Go
Mong Kok is essential for foodies, shopaholics, and first-time visitors to Hong Kong.
Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of walking.
Mong Kok is always busy and crowded—keep an eye on your belongings and watch out for pickpockets.
In the street markets, be sure to bargain for better prices.
It’s a good idea to carry an umbrella, as the weather can be unpredictable in Hong Kong.

Mong Kok, located in Kowloon, is well served by public transportation. Take the MTR to Mong Kok Station or Prince Edward Station, or take the MTR East Rail to Mong Kok East Station. A number of buses and minibuses also stop in Mong Kok, including bus A21 from the airport.
When to Get There
While you can visit Mong Kok at any time, it looks quite different from day to night—so it’s worth visiting at both times. Mong Kok is known for a number of street markets that really get going when the sun sets, such as the Ladies Market.
