POINT OF INTEREST

North Point

North Point, Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Located at the northernmost part of Hong Kong Island, and east of Causeway Bay, is the North Point District. Formerly an industrial area, North Point is primarily a residential neighborhood, but one that offers great dining options, bustling wet markets, historic landmarks, and other hidden gems off the beaten path.

The Basics

The best way to explore North Point is to take the tram from Causeway Bay and walk around the neighborhood. The tram will take you past the iconic Chun Yeung Wet Market, the local go-to for fresh food and produce. Shopping options range from small independent stores to name-brand outlets to shopping malls. Visitors also enjoy checking out up-and-coming artists at Oi! Street Art Space, or catching a Cantonese opera performance at the Sunbeam Theater.

Foodies delight in the number of dining options in the neighborhood, including several Michelin-starred restaurants. Explore North Point independently, or join a food tour to discover a range of local favorites. Combine a stop here with a hop-on hop-off bus tour, or a boat cruise along Victoria Harbor, to see some of the top attractions in Hong Kong.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • For the best views, get a seat at the front of the upper deck of the tram.

  • Wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared to do a lot of walking.

  • Carry an umbrella, as the weather can be unpredictable in Hong Kong.

How to Get There

North Point is located on Hong Kong Island, between Causeway Bay and Quarry Bay. It’s easy to reach using public transportation, including MTR (North Point Station), tram, bus, and minibus. It’s also possible to take a ferry between North Point Ferry Pier and Kowloon City or Hung Hom.

When to Get There

North Point can be visited at any time. Different shops, restaurants, and venues have their own opening hours, so it’s best to check ahead with individual providers. Many visitors combine a visit to North Point with a stop at nearby Causeway Bay.

Sunbeam Theater

Founded by emigrants from Shanghai in the 1970s, Sunbeam Theater is an institution in Hong Kong, and one of the few remaining Cantonese opera theaters in the city. In addition to live performances, there is also a small cinema within the theater.
