Plaza de la Independencia

Madrid, Spain, 28001

Located at the gateway to Retiro Park, Madrid's Independence Plaza (Plaza de la Independencia is perhaps best known for its centerpiece—the Puerta de Alcalá. This 18th-century neoclassical monument, in the middle of the bustling roundabout, sees lots of traffic; Independence Plaza is one of the busiest spots in the Spanish capital.

The basics

Independence Plaza opened in 1778, and sits at the intersection of several main thoroughfares, so it's no surprise that the square is busy with traffic. With all the cars whizzing by, this isn't a place you'll want to hang out, but it's a great choice to admire the plaza's huge, arched monument on your way to Retiro Park.

Beyond the well-tended walking paths in the park, you can add Independence Plaza on a wider tour around Salamanca—a chic district with plentiful shopping—or stop by after visiting the nearby museums. The Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museums are not far, and the nearby Royal Botanical Garden is a must-see for horticulture enthusiasts.

Things to know before you go

  • History fans shouldn't miss the Puerta de Alcalá, which sits in place of one of Madrid's ancient city gates, and once served as the city's main entrance.
  • Be very careful crossing the roundabout, and be sure to cross at the crosswalk.
  • Restrooms are available in nearby Retiro Park, next to the Galápagos Fountain.

How to get there

The best way to reach Independence Plaza is by metro. You should take the #2 metro line to the Retiro stop, or the #4 line to Serrano. Otherwise, you can save yourself the trouble of navigating public transit and book a tour. Walking tours of the literary quarter often stop here, as do many hop-on hop-off bus tours.

When to get there

There's really no bad time to visit Independence Plaza, which is lit elegantly at night, and a scenic stop along the Calle de Alcalá during the day. Expect the most pleasant weather if you visit in late-spring (April and May) or fall (September and October). You can enjoy warm, sunny days without the peak summer crowds.

Shopping and Tapas in Salamanca

Independence Plaza is located at the southern end of Salamanca—an upscale, walkable neighborhood that's perfect for shopping at high-end boutiques and admiring the elegant homes. You can find several designer shops here including Gucci and Louis Vuitton on Calle de Serrano—plus an outpost of El Corte Inglés, a local department store. When you work up an appetite, fill up on tapas and pintxos at Mercado de la Paz, a traditional neighborhood marketplace.
