Polynesian Spa
1000 Hinemoa St., Lakeside, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, 3010
Treat yourself to a day at the luxurious, award-winning Polynesian Spa in the North Island town of Rotorua, known for its bubbling mud pools and spurting geysers. With more than 20 pools fed by natural springs, the spa offers a menu of treatments designed to address various health and wellness needs.
The Basics
Two different springs feed the pools at Polynesian Spa. One provides more acidic waters, which can relieve tired muscles; the other provides more alkaline waters, which can nourish the skin. Visitors can choose from among different pools—such as a private pool, family pool, or adults-only pool—many of which overlook Lake Rotorua. Book a facial or massage, or splurge on a package that combines treatments and facilities. You can reserve your bathing time online before you arrive.
Many guided tours of Rotorua include some time at Polynesian Spa, alongside other attractions like thermal geyser and mud pool parks, and Maori cultural shows. Some tours depart from Rotorua, while others come from farther afield.
Things to Know Before You Go
Swimwear (made from synthetic materials, not cotton) is mandatory in the public pools, but optional in the private pools.
For safety reasons, a minimum of two adults (over age 15) per private pool is required.
The spa has an on-site gift shop and café.
Remove jewelry before entering the pools, as the minerals in the water can discolor some metals.
Some spa packages include towels and lockers; otherwise, you can rent them if needed.
How to Get There
Just south of the Government Gardens on the edge of Lake Rotorua, Polynesian Spa is easy to reach on foot from many parts of central Rotorua. If you’ll be arriving by vehicle, there’s plenty of free parking nearby.
When to Get There
Polynesian Spa is open year-round, every day from morning through night, with last pool entry 45 minutes before closing. As the water is heated, you can use the outdoor pools even in winter.
Orakei Korako
For a different kind of geothermal experience, check out the Orakei Korako Geothermal Park, about halfway between Rotorua and Taupo. Terraces covered in boiling springs and vibrant colors are surrounded by native bush and crisscrossed with boardwalks. Accessible only by boat from the parking area, Orakei Korako feels a bit like a different world.
