POINT OF INTEREST

Pravcice Gate (Pravcická Brána)

Hřensko, Czech Republic, 405 02

At the northwestern edge of the Czech Republic, you’ll find one of the country’s favorite nature escapes. Bohemian Switzerland National Park is blanketed in lush green landscapes, steep navigable river gorges, and the 52-foot (16-meter -high Pravcice Gate (Pravcická Brána, Europe’s largest natural rock arch and the park’s symbol.

The basics

The riverside town of Hřensko is a great place to stop before or after trekking up to see the Pravcice Gate, which you can view from various viewpoints in the park. You can then return on the circular route by boat down the calm waters of the river-cut Edward’s Gorge. The park is a favorite with day-trippers from the Czech Republic and Germany alike. Day tours from Prague that visit the park are particularly popular as they allow you to visit two countries in one day and typically include such excursions as boat trips.

Things to know before you go

  • Pravcice Gate is a natural wonder that offers excellent views; ideal for hikers and photographers.
  • Several viewpoints have fees so remember to bring cash.
  • There is a restaurant near the arch, but given its limited options, you may wish to bring your own food.
  • It is recommended that you wear boots and comfortable layered clothing.

How to get there

It takes around two hours to drive to Bohemian Switzerland National Park from Prague. Much of the trek from Hřensko to the arch is along a road, so if you wish to bypass this part of the excursion, take the bus to the head of the Pravcicka Brana trail. Alternatively, skip the hassle of planning logistics by joining a tour.

When to get there

The most popular time to visit Bohemian Switzerland National Park is from April to September when the weather is most suited for hiking and other outdoor activities. The fairly mild winter season, however, offers fewer crowds as well as picturesque snow-blanketed scenery and winter light.

Cycle Route

The park also appeals to cyclists as the Elbe Cycle Route passes through it, running along the Elbe River from its origin in the Giant Mountains up to the German border at Hřensko and on to the North Sea. Within the Czech Republic, it is marked as the route CT 2 and is comparable to the long-distance EuroVelo 7 route.
