Canada’s Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is home to an extensive collections of dinosaur fossils. The museum’s 10 galleries are devoted to paleontology and feature 40 complete dinosaur skeletons and a collection of 130,000 fossils. The Preparation Lab shows how paleontology technicians prepare locally found fossils for research and exhibition.
The Royal Tyrrell Museum offers hands-on exhibits and fun activities for the whole family. Children will enjoy wandering among the mounted Tyrannosaurus rex, Stegosaurus, and Triceratops skeletons in Dinosaur Hall and learning what it’s like to be a real paleontologist by joining a junior dig experience. Visitors can take a guided or self-guided tour along an interpretive trail through the surrounding badlands and learn about the unique geology of the region.

An admission ticket is required to visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum; purchase a one- or two-day ticket ahead of time online or in person on the day of your visit.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is the only Canadian museum dedicated solely to paleontology. Located four miles (six kilometers) northwest from Drumheller, Alberta and 84 miles (135 kilometers) northeast of Calgary, the Royal Tyrrell Museum is situated in the Canadian Badlands, a unique geological area where many dinosaur fossils have been found.
The Royal Tyrrell Museum is open seven days a week from May through September, including holidays, with late evening hours during peak summer months. The museum is closed Mondays from October to May and is open all holidays except for Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The Canadian Badlands is a unique geological wonder characterized by ochre-striped towers, buttes, mesas, and hoodoos. Visit Horseshoe Canyon for some of the best views of the badlands, and don’t miss the Willow Creek Hoodoos along highway 10, just east of Drumheller. Dinosaur enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Dinosaur Provincial Park, the site of many important dinosaur fossil discoveries.
