Sabeto Valley
Nadi, Viti Levu
A short journey north of Nadi pulls you from the bustle of town to the quiet Sabeto Valley. A lush, verdant area, the dense-forested landscape was carved by the flow of the Sabeto River running through its center. The valley is sprinkled with traditional Fijian villages and natural sites, set at a different pace.
The Basics
Top attractions within the valley include a stop at the mud baths and Garden of the Sleeping Giant. The baths, next to volcanically-heated hot springs, are large pools of mud and are said to contain healing properties. Most visitors take a dip in the pool before applying their mud-screen. Dry out in the sun for your rustic spa treatment of sorts and rinse off for a unique local experience.
Also located in the valley is the Garden of the Sleeping Giant—a 50-acre (20-hectare) boardwalked sanctuary that features Fiji’s largest collection of orchids and more than 2,000 different flora species. Tours to the Sabeto Valley typically include pick up from Nadi, Lautoka, and Denarau, as well as stop to the above mentioned sites and other valley attractions.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Snacks and meals are not always included, so pack something to eat just in case and bring plenty of water.
- If you plan on visiting the mud baths be sure to bring your swimsuit and a towel.
- Wear comfortable and cool footwear for your walk in the Garden of the Sleeping Giant.
- Consider bringing bug repellent and sunscreen.
How to Get There
Sabeto Valley is roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive north of Nadi. The best way to get there is by car, and most tours provide necessary transportation to and from the valley and other attractions.
When to Get There
With temperatures averaging 85°F (30°C) throughout the year, there’s really no bad time to visit Fiji. Set out on your Sabeto Valley excursion in the morning to enjoy cooler temperatures in the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, and consider arriving to the mud baths towards the end of the day to avoid the heat of the day.
Snap a Pic at Vuda Lookout
Though not technically in Sabeto Valley, a quick pit stop at Vuda Lookout offers guests unparalleled panoramic vista of Fiji. The promontory has some of the best views on the west coast of the island and makes for a worthy photo-op.
