Taejongdae Resort Park
24 Jeonmang-ro, Yeongdo-gu, Busan, South Korea
The rocky seaside cliffs of Taejongdae Resort Park are situated on the southernmost tip of Yeongdo Island. The area, named after King Taejong of the Silla Dynasty, offers access to a rock beach, a lighthouse, a few temples, an observatory, and plenty of nature trails.
The Basics
As one of Busan’s most popular outdoor areas, Taejongdae Resort Park features as a stop on several city sightseeing tours. Park admission is free, but visitors can purchase an inexpensive ticket for a small train that stops at various points of interest throughout the park. The park also has a small dock where passengers can embark on short boat tours for a view of the island’s coastal scenery from the water.
If you get hungry while exploring Taejongdae Resort Park, stop at one of the spots serving up fresh seafood. On a clear day, you can see the Japanese island of Tsushima in the distance.
Things to Know Before You Go
Taejongdae Resort Park is a must-visit for families, couples, and first-time visitors.
Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to climb; the highest point in the park sits at 820 feet (250 meters).
Strollers are available to rent at the park.
How to Get There
While the Busan Subway doesn’t stop at the park, you can take Bus 88 or 101 from Busan Station to the Taejongdae Cliff bus stop. There are also parking facilities nearby. Alternatively, take a guided tour with included transport.
When to Get There
The park is open throughout the year, with extended hours during summer. If you visit in summer, plan to arrive early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat.
Praying for Rain
According to local legend, King Taejong promised to ask the emperor of heaven for rain on his deathbed to alleviate a drought. The day he died, it rained. As a result, any rain that falls on the anniversary of his death, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is called Taejong’s Rain. The tradition continues today: During periods of drought in Busan, locals come to Taejongdae to pray for rain.
