The Scoop

The Scoop at More, London, England

Located on the southern bank of the River Thames, and within view of the iconic Tower Bridge and Norman Foster’s City Hall building, the Scoop is a sunken amphitheater with a roughly 1,000-person capacity. During the summer, it hosts a range of film screenings, concerts, live sports events, theatrical performances, and more, as part of the London Bridge City festival.

The basics

For much of the year, The Scoop is a curious, largely empty feature, but during the summer months, it blossoms as a cultural venue, with a wide range of free-for-all shows, events, and performances offered during the season-long London Bridge City festival.

Be sure to consult the events calendar before your visit, and arrive early to snag a good seat—options include everything from plays performed by local theater companies, concerts featuring BBC Music artists and DJs, live screenings of sports events like Wimbledon, and evening movie showings. If you’re not visiting when the festival is held, you might spot it during Thames cruises, hop-on hop-off bus tours, and other London sightseeing excursions.

Things to know before you go

  • The Scoop is exposed to the elements, so it’s advised to dress for the weather.

  • If you plan to attend a performance or other longer event, you may wish to bring a cushion or jacket with you to soften the stone seating.

  • Most events are free and you do not need to purchase tickets in advance.

  • The Scoop is accessible to wheelchair users, and has designated seating areas; it’s best to arrive early, as seating is first come, first served.

How to get there

The Scoop is located at More London on the south bank of the River Thames. The nearest station is London Bridge, which is served by a wide range of mainline trains and bus services, as well as the Jubilee and Northern lines of the London Underground. River boat services also stop nearby at London Bridge City Pier.

When to get there

The best time to visit The Scoop is from June to August, when a roster of live performances, screenings, and other events are held; be sure to consult the London Bridge City festival’s online calendar for specific timings. Note that events can be canceled with little warning due to inclement weather.

Shakespeare’s Globe

The Scoop happens to be just 20 minutes on foot from another one of London’s most iconic, riverfront, open-air venues: Shakespeare’s Globe. A reconstruction of the theater where Shakespeare’s plays were once performed—complete with thatched roof—the Globe today hosts a range of Shakespearean plays, as well as other theatrical performances.
