Waikiki Aquarium
2777 Kalākaua Ave., Honolulu, Oahu, Oahu, HI, 96815
Visit the Waikiki Aquarium to see and learn all about Hawaii's marine life. Observe a diverse range of species in the aquarium's 3,500 marine animals on exhibit, from monk seals to reef sharks. Some you might spot later on a snorkeling trip, while others are difficult to glimpse in the wild.
The Basics
The Waikiki Aquarium, originally built in 1904, is the second oldest aquarium in the US. Explore more than a dozen exhibits, such as a living coral reef, while learning about the importance of education and conservation. Take part in activities such as a Reef Night where participants go on a guided reef tour at night or do a behind-the-scenes tour. Visit the aquarium independently or on a hop-on hop-off trolly or Segway tour.
Things to Know Before You Go
This aquarium introduces you to Hawaii’s marine life without having to snorkel.
You can pick up gifts, souvenirs, and books at the aquarium gift shop.
The aquarium is wheelchair accessible and offers a discount for people with disabilities.
How to Get There
Waikiki Aquarium’s central location and limited parking make driving to the aquarium a difficult prospect. Instead, take the bus (Route 14, 19, 20, or 22) or Waikiki Trolley’s Green Line. The aquarium is also within walking distance of many Waikiki attractions.
When to Get There
You can visit the aquarium year-round, but some activities are only available in certain seasons. Check the aquarium’s website before visiting to see what is happening when you are in town.
The Best Snorkeling in Waikiki
Set along a designated Marine Life Conservation District, Waikiki Aquarium is in front of a living coral reef and some of the best snorkeling spots in Waikiki. After learning to identify marine life in the aquarium, head to nearby Sans Souci Beach and Queens Beach. Both beaches offer sandy areas that make it easy to get into the water. Then, snorkel along a reef teeming with fish and other marine life.
