Wignacourt Museum

2 Triq Il-Kullegg, Rabat, 2050

A visit to the Wignacourt Museum, which traces the history of the area over the last thousand-odd years, immerses you in Malta's history. You'll find Maltese and European art, relics, and reliquaries, plus a replica of the Shroud of Turin. You also get to wander an underground labyrinth of catacombs.

The basics

This two-part museum is spread across the former residence of the Chaplains of the Knights of Malta and the subterranean grotto of St. Paul—the latter was used for hiding in World War II and catacombs in the third century AD. You'll see religious art, paintings, artifacts, old relics and more that help tell the history of Rabat and Mdina. It’s worth visiting independently or on a private, customizable tour.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum is partially wheelchair-accessible, with step-free access at the main entrance and an elevator connecting the main floor and the level above it.

  • Tickets are free for children aged 6 and under.

  • Audio guides in English, Maltese, Italian, French, German, Spanish, and Russian are all available for a small additional fee.

How to get there

The museum is located in Rabat, just outside of the old Roman city. It's about a 20-minute drive from Valletta along Route 7. If you're coming by bus, you can take lines 51, 52, or 53 to the Inguanez stop and then walk around 10 minutes to the museum.

When to get there

The Wignacourt Museum is open daily throughout the year. The last admission of the day is one hour before closing time. It's usually at least busiest first thing in the morning, right when it opens.

Also in Mdina and Rabat

There are plenty of Malta attractions worth checking out while in the adjacent Rabat and Mdina areas, especially if you’re a fan of history and architecture. Highlights include the baroque St. Paul's Cathedral, Roman-era Domvs Romana (Roman House), and elegant Casa Bernard, a restored palazzo dating to the 16th century.
