Cheyenne was site of the 1868 Battle of the Washita, in which Lt. Col. George A. Custer initiated an attack upon Chief Black Kettle and his people. This was the first attack in a campaign to quell uprisings by the Cheyenne and Arapaho, who felt the government had broken promises made at the 1867 peace treaty signing in Medicine Lodge, Kan.
