Indiana was founded in 1805 when George Clymer of Philadelphia, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, donated 250 acres of land for county buildings. Later, before the Civil War, Indiana became an important station on the Underground Railroad. In more recent history, the town was the birthplace and childhood home of actor Jimmy Stewart. A bronze statue of the actor, unveiled for his 75th birthday, stands on the lawn of the Indiana County Courthouse on Philadelphia Street.
