Westwego was founded in 1870 by the Texas and Pacific Railroad, which was compensated by the state to build a westward railroad. Travelers heard rail workers yell “West we go!” as trains departed, which, according to legend, is how the town got its unusual name. The town's chief industries are marine-based, including fisheries and boat- and shipbuilding. Recreational activities can be enjoyed at Bayou Segnette State Park off US 90. Learn More...
