About DevonCanada's first planned community, Devon was created by Imperial Oil Resources Ltd. in 1948 to provide accommodations for the workers employed in the company's oilfields. Imperial Leduc No. 1, the area's first well, had just put the town of Devon on the map. The town's name was derived from the Devonian formation, the oil's source, a stratum 1,524 metres (5,000 ft.) underground.
Devon is on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River, where fishing often yields northern pike, walleye and goldeye. Year-round recreational activities include canoeing, cross-country skiing, golf, hiking, ice-skating and swimming.
