The Phillips Collection is at 1600 21st St. N.W. at Q St.; street parking in the vicinity is limited. The museum is America’s first museum of modern art, with works by such artists as Pierre Bonnard, Paul Cézanne, Richard Diebenkorn, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffe, Pablo Picasso and Mark Rothko. The museum continues to actively collect new acquisitions, many by contemporary artists such as Wolfgang Laib, Whitfield Lovell, and Zilia Sánchez. Special exhibitions are presented on a regular basis.

The best-known and most popular work in this distinguished collection is Pierre-Auguste Renoir's “Luncheon of the Boating Party.” It depicts an idyllic balcony scene at a French restaurant overlooking the River Seine, where a group of Parisians (including real-life friends of the artist) commune over good food and drink. The painting has a timeless appeal, right down to the disheveled array of glasses, wine bottles and dishes spread over the rumpled tablecloth.

Note: Timed tickets must be purchased in advance.

Guided tours are available. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
