Tobermory
The water's exceptional clarity and the legacy of shipping scattered over the bay's bottom have made Tobermory a scuba diver's mecca and the headquarters for Fathom Five National Marine Park . The park includes 19 nearby islands and protects 22 shipwrecks within its boundaries. Bruce Peninsula National Park also has its headquarters at Tobermory.
In addition to the national parks, the area offers excellent fishing in local lakes and streams; canoeing and kayaking also are popular activities. As the western terminus for the 782-kilometre (485-mi.) Bruce Trail (the eastern terminus is in Queenston), Tobermory also is popular with hikers. Catering to the needs of its visitors, the town offers a variety of outfitters ranging from dive shops to charter fishing boats. Other recreational activities include camping, bird-watching and bicycling. Winter activities include snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.
There are three lighthouses in the area: Cove Island Lighthouse was constructed in 1855; Big Tub Lighthouse was built in 1885; and Flowerpot Island Lighthouse was built in 1896.
