On the west coast, Mayagüez (mah-yah-GWES) is the island's fifth-largest city and an important commercial port for sugar, coffee and fruit as well as one of the world's largest tuna-packing centers. It also is the home of the College of Agricultural Science of the University of Puerto Rico. An elegant plaza dominates the center of the city, which was almost destroyed by an earthquake in 1918.
