In the 1950s a philanthropic foundation created a program that covered the architectural fees for the construction of public buildings. The program attracted distinguished architects and resulted in the construction of more than 60 architecturally renowned public and private buildings, seven designated as National Historic Landmarks.
In 1997, the city erected a new architectural landmark, the Bartholomew County Memorial for Veterans. Twenty-five limestone pillars, each 40 feet high, bear the names of soldiers who gave their lives in 20th-century wars. Words from their letters and journals are carved into the stones. The evocative memorial stands on the courthouse lawn at Third and Washington streets.
Slurp a signature Green River Float at the mahogany-and-marble bar inside Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum , 329 Washington St., as a 1908 self-playing pipe organ blasts out a magnificent tune. This beloved establishment, which dates back to 1900 and has been restored to its original splendor, features an impressive collection of antique soda fountains and other nostalgic items; phone (812) 378-1900.
