Petersburg was laid out next to the Sangamon River by a surveyor hired by George Warburton and Peter Lukins in 1833. John Taylor and Hezekiah King bought the town and hired Abraham Lincoln to resurvey the site in 1836. Many New Salem residents moved to Petersburg after it was made the seat of Menard County in 1839.
