Marmottan, Musée

( Highly Recommended )

Although situated off the beaten track, this gallery is a must for anyone interested in the Impressionist movement and in Monet in particular.
The museum was named after Paul Marmottan, who bequeathed his house and his private collections of Renaissance and 18th- and 19th-century art to the Institut de France. These were later enriched by several bequests, including 100 paintings by Monet donated by his son: detailed studies of Monet's garden in Giverny, particularly a group of nymphéas (water lilies) paintings, provide insights into the artist's approach (see also Musée de l'Orangerie) and there are paintings of Rouen Cathedral (done in different light conditions according to the time of day) and of the River Thames in London. Most important of all, perhaps, is a relatively early work, called Impression, Soleil levant (1872), which created a sensation at the time and gave its name to the Impressionist movement.
There are also interesting works by Monet's contemporaries, Renoir, Pissarro, Sisley, Morisot and Gauguin.
