Picasso, Musée

( Do not miss )

This is one of the most comprehensive museums devoted to the great 20th-century Spanish artist who lived and died in France. The collection was brought together after Picasso's death and consists of works donated to the State by his family in lieu of death duties, and his private collection - together totalling more than 200 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and ceramics.
The Hôtel Salé, situated at the heart of the historic Marais, was chosen to house this important collection. Like many other mansions in the area, it had been neglected and underwent extensive renovation to turn it into a museum. The interior decoration is very discreet, focusing attention on the beautiful stone staircase with its elegant wrought-iron banister.
Displayed in chronological order, the works illustrate the different phases of Picasso's artistic creation and the various techniques he used, from the blue period tainted with a certain pessimism (Autoportrait bleu), through the more optimistic pink period, to the successive Cubist periods. The tour of the museum is a fascinating journey in the company of one of the most forceful creative minds of this century. Picasso's private collection includes works by Renoir, Cézanne, Rousseau, Braque etc.
