Palais-Royal

( Highly Recommended )

This is more than just another historic building, it is a pleasant, relatively peaceful area with the Jardin du Palais-Royal in its centre. Here, cultural institutions occupy a prominent place, next to charming arcades and picturesque old streets. The palace built by Richelieu and bequeathed to the king on the cardinal's death now houses the ministry of culture and two important constitutional bodies, but the gardens are accessible through archways situated all round. Enclosed by arcading on three sides and an elegant double colonnade along the fourth, they are a haven of peace, where Parisians working in the area love to window-shop during their lunch hour along the row of quaint little boutiques hidden under the arcades.
An 18th-century addition to the original building houses the Comédie-Française, France's National Theatre, where all the classics are performed. From the place André Malraux in front, the Opéra Garnier can be seen at the top of the avenue de l'Opéra.
To the east of the Palais-Royal, off the rue Croix des Petits Champs, the Galerie Véro-Dodat is one of several elegant arcades in the area. Further up the street, the place des Victoires, designed by Mansart in the 17th century, is worth a detour for its classical architecture and for its fashion boutiques.
