Opéra Garnier

( Highly Recommended )

A night at the opera to see Giselle or Sleeping Beauty is one of the great moments of a visit to Paris, not only for the quality of the productions but also for the sheer splendour of what is still referred to as the opera, in spite of the fact that there are now two opera houses in Paris!
The Palais Garnier (named after its architect) was built in 1875 in neo-classical style, but the decoration is unmistakably late 19th century and includes a group of statues called La Danse by Carpeaux, a copy of the original now held in the Musée d'Orsay. Inside, the grand staircase and the foyer are magnificent. In the main hall, restored to its original splendour, visitors can now fully appreciate the ceiling decorated by Chagall.
The museum contains paintings, watercolours and pastels illustrating the history of opera and ballet from the 18th century to the present day, mainly through portraits of famous singers, dancers and composers.
