Montmartre
( Do not miss ) This unassuming village overlooking Paris became a myth during the 19th century, when it was taken over by artists and writers attracted by its picturesque surroundings and Bohemian way of life. La 'Butte' (the mound) managed to retain its village atmosphere and now that the area has become a major tourist attraction, an undefinable nostalgia lingers on, perpetuating Montmartre's magic appeal. In its heyday, the district was the favourite haunt and home of many famous artists. They met in cafés and in cabarets such as the Moulin-Rouge (1889), whose singers and dancers acquired world-wide fame through Toulouse-Lautrec's paintings and posters. Halfway up the hill, a wooden construction (13 place Emile-Goudeau) known as the Bateau-Lavoir, where, amongst others, Picasso, Braque and Juan Gris had their studios, was the modest birthplace of Cubism; destroyed by fire in 1970, it has since been rebuilt. At the top of the hill stands the village square, place du Tertre, close to the Sacré Coeur basilica. The Musée de Montmartre has works and memorabilia by the artists who lived here, and the narrow cobbled streets of the 'Butte' still have some amazing sights to offer, including a vineyard in the picturesque rue des Saules and two windmills in the twisting rue Lepic.
