St-Sulpice, église
(
Highly Recommended
)
The church and square of St-Sulpice form a harmonious architectural ensemble, mostly dating from the 18th century except for
part of the church and the central fountain.
The original church, founded by the Abbey of St-Germain-des-Prés, was rebuilt and extended in the 17th century but was not
completed until the mid-18th century. The Italian-style façade, designed by Servandoni, is surmounted by two slightly different
towers crowned by balustrades and is in marked contrast to the rest of the building. Among the wealth of interior decoration
are several statues by Bouchardon and outstanding murals by Delacroix (first chapel on the right) as well as a splendid organ
by Cavaillé-Coll, traditionally played by the best organists in France.
Servandoni had also submitted plans for the square in front of the church, but they were abandoned and a monumental fountain
designed by Visconti was eventually placed in its centre in 1844.
