Saint-Louis, Ile
(
Highly Recommended
)
The peaceful atmosphere of this island is apparent as soon as you walk along its shaded embankment, lined with elegant private
mansions that stand as silent witnesses of a bygone era. The island was formed at the beginning of the 17th century, when
two small islands were united and joined to the mainland by a couple of bridges linked by the rue des Deux Ponts, which still
exists; at the same time, private residences were built along the embankment and the straight narrow streets. The whole project
was completed in a remarkably short time between 1627 and 1664. Since then, time seems to have stood still on the Ile Saint-Louis,
which to this day retains its provincial character.
A few architectural gems can be seen along quai de Bourbon and quai d'Anjou, which offer fine views of the Right Bank. From
the western tip of the island you can see Notre-Dame and the Ile de la Cité. Concerts are regularly given in the classical
Church of St-Louis-en-l'Ile, richly decorated inside.
