Nestled in the southeast corner of the commonwealth in the heart of the Tidewater/Hampton Roads region, Chesapeake was created in 1963 following the merger of Norfolk County and the city of Norfolk. Though relatively new as a city, Chesapeake was one of the first areas explored by Capt. John Smith in the 1600s. During the Revolutionary War, American and British forces clashed here in the Battle of Great Bridge.

A few villages are scattered along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, providing easy stopover points for food, lodging and cultural heritage.
