Its peak location between the Shoal and Yellow rivers inspired this Northwest Florida city's name, though the area holds a number of other distinctions as well—county seat of Okaloosa County, a high-for-Florida elevation of 235 feet (72 m) and record rainfall and temperatures. In fact, the city was once informally called “the icebox of Florida” due to its cold winters, but with rapid development, important transportation routes and growing population, it's known nowadays as Hub City. Another strong presence in the area is the military; Eglin Air Force Base is just south of the city.
