DESTINATION

Donaldsonville

Donaldsonville was the site of the 1863 Battle of Fort Butler, the only Union victory led by freed slaves. Though virtually destroyed during the Civil War, the city was quickly rebuilt.

The central business district, several blocks north of the main highway (SR 1), fronts the Mississippi levee. Downtown's Railroad Avenue offers interesting architecture as well as a handful of shops and restaurants.
