Thibodaux

St. John's Episcopal Church on Jackson Street dates from 1844. It was the church of the Confederacy's “Fighting Bishop,” Leonidas Polk, founder of Lafourche Parish. Across the bayou is Rienzi, a plantation built in 1796 by order of the Queen of Spain; she intended to use it as a sanctuary in the event that Napoleon Bonaparte defeated Spain. Rienzi is not open to the public.
