Meadville
The first direct primary took place here in 1842, and use of this system eventually spread across the country.
Of architectural interest is the Unitarian Church in Diamond Park. Built in 1835, it is a fine example of Greek Revival architecture. The Meadville Market House on Market Street has been used as an open-air marketplace since its founding about 1870 and is said to be the state's oldest continuously operating such marketplace; it is the cultural hub of the community. The Meadville Council on the Arts occupies the second floor.
If you head 13 miles northeast on SR 77 then just south to 17620 John Brown Rd. in Guys Mills, you'll reach the site of the John Brown Tannery, which was operated by the abolitionist 1825-35. All that remains of the tannery are its 8-foot stone walls. Interpretive markers at the site guide visitors to different points of interest, including the graves of Brown's first wife and two of their sons.
