Great Allegheny Passage
The Great Allegheny Passage is one of the longest multipurpose recreational trails in the eastern United States, spanning 150 continuous miles between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Md. Bicyclists, cross-country skiers, walkers and, in some places, equestrians travel through the Laurel Highlands along the scenic Youghiogheny and Casselman rivers. The 3,200-foot Big Savage Tunnel near the Mason-Dixon Line is usually closed Dec. 15-April 10; there is no alternate route.The passage connects with the C&O Canal Towpath, providing a 334.5-mile motor-free route to Washington, D.C. Restrooms and facilities are available at several towns along the trail, which include (running west to east) the Pittsburgh riverfront; McKeesport; Boston; Cedar Creek Park; Whitsett; Connellsville; Ohiopyle; Confluence; Rockwood; Meyersdale; Frostburg, Md.; and Cumberland, Md. The trail passes through Ohiopyle State Park, which offers white-water rafting and cottages for camping. Fallingwater, one of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural landmarks, also is nearby.
