Lexington
Of scenic interest is rugged Goshen Pass Natural Area Preserve, 15 miles northwest on SR 39. Here the southwest face of Little North Mountain drops sharply from 3,600 feet to the Maury River, about 1,800 feet below. Rhododendrons, mountain laurels, pines and dogwoods grow profusely along the river and the surrounding mountains. Traversed by stagecoaches in the 19th century, Goshen Pass is enjoyed today for the recreational activities it provides; phone (540) 292-3265.
A 7-mile stretch of railbed between Lexington and Buena Vista has been developed into the Chessie Nature Trail. The trail is designed for pedestrians who enjoy hiking, bird-watching, running, fishing, cross-country skiing and picnicking. The Virginia Horse Center, off SR 39, offers horse shows, workshops and seminars.
