This splendid theatre on the southern slopes of the Acropolis was built in AD 161-174 by Tiberius Claudius Atticus Herodes, a wealthy businessman from Marathon, in memory of his wife Rigilla. As well as being the Roman Consul here, Atticus Herodes was a great patron of the arts, who erected many public buildings in Athens. A good view of the theatre, which seats 5,000, can be had from within the Acropolis itself, though the Odeon is only normally open during the Athens Festival, when it makes a dramatic setting for the drama and music on stage. When first built the theatre had a wooden roof, white marble seating and a mosaic floor. It was restored after World War II, and has been used by the Athens Festival since 1955. It is known locally as the Herodeion.
