London Zoo

( Highly Recommended )

Opened in 1828, this was the world's first serious zoo. It soon achieved worldwide fame and reached its peak in the 1950s, when visitor numbers topped over 3 million per year. In recent times, however, as a result of current opinion regarding captive animals and a new generation of open, cage-free zoos, attendances fell so dramatically that it too was put on the endangered list. Now, thankfully, its future is secure and even though too many of its cages and enclosures are still small and old-fashioned, it still makes an enjoyable family day out for most visitors.
The zoo is not overly large but it's best to plan your day around the timetable of activities, such as feeding times, talks, shows and the entertaining Animals in Action presentations. Other highlights include the Mappin Terrace sloth bears, the penguin pool, the Snowdon Aviary and the elephant house (particularly at weighing and bathing times).
