Tate Britain and Tate Modern
( Do not miss ) In 2000 the Tate Gallery, one of London's great artistic institutions, split into two - Tate Britain and Tate Modern. Tate Britain occupies the original Millbank site and retains its function as the showcase of British art from 1500 to the present. Its new entrance, exhibition space and galleries are due to open in Summer 2001. It is impossible to say what will be on display at any one time as exhibits go in and out of storage and are also rotated to provincial Tate museums. However the highlight of the British collection is the Turner Bequest, comprising many of the finest works of JMW Turner, regarded by many as Britain's greatest landscape painter. The Tate Britain has a superb collection of High Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite pictures and the often controversial Turner Prize also remains here. Tate Modern, housed in Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's formidable Bankside Power Station, on the South Bank of the Thames opposite St Paul's, opened in summer 2000. It is not only the first major new museum in the capital for over a century but also one of the most important contemporary galleries in the world, devoted to art post-1900. Look out for works by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Duchamp, Bacon, Rothko and Warhol.
