Wallace Collection
( Do not miss ) This is one of the capital's hidden gems, the perfect antidote to the bustle of nearby Oxford Street. The collection is housed in the peaceful surroundings of a small stately home and you can enjoy some of London's finest works of art while clocks tick gently, secure in the knowledge that there will be only a handful of fellow visitors to disturb your concentration. The predominant theme of the collection, the legacy of the inveterate 19th-century collector, Sir Richard Wallace, is French 18th-century art. Downstairs, the André Boulle furniture (including pieces made for the Palace of Versailles), is truly staggering, both in opulence and sheer bulk. Alongside is the best museum collection of Sèvres porcelain in the world. Less well known is the Wallace's magnificent collection of arms and armour - arguably the equal of that in the Tower of London. Upstairs in the picture galleries the Gallic theme continues. The most notable exception is the famous Gallery 22, where, among works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Claude and Velázquez, the star exhibits are the Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals and Perseus and Andromeda by Titian.
