St James's Palace

( Worth Seeing )

After the Palace of Whitehall was destroyed in 1698, the court moved to St James's Palace, which remained the official royal London residence until 1837, when Queen Victoria decamped to Buckingham Palace. St James's still retains a royal function, however, and is the London office of the Prince of Wales. Sadly, little remains of the palace's Tudor structure except for the splendid main gatehouse in Pall Mall. The Chapel Royal (which is the only part of the palace open to the public) also retains its original exterior. Adjacent to the palace is Clarence House, home to the Queen Mother (closed to the public).
