The Monument is the world's highest free-standing column; it measures 62m, which is exactly the distance due east to the site of the bakery in Pudding Lane where the Great Fire of London began in 1666. It was commissioned by King Charles II 'to preserve the memory of this dreadful Visitation' and designed jointly by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke. You can climb the inside of the column via a 311-step spiral staircase and enjoy views of the City.
