This gem of a begijnhof, which is included on the UNESCO list, stands well hidden behind walls in the Lange Violetenstraat. The great difference between it and the better known Elisabethbegijnhof is that the present owners and residents of the former convent have signed a contract undertaking to maintain its peace and quiet. You cannot go in after nine o'clock in the evening and anyone who wants to end their days here had better put their name down on the waiting list straight away. The 17th-century houses and the church - with a painting that points to The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb - are still completely intact. A walk through the grounds gives a view of a Calvary and the abbey of Nieuwen Bosch. You need special permission to visit the house of the Sister Superior.
