No single political party has left so many traces behind in the city as the Socialist Workers' Movement, and even now it seems on Labour Day (1 May) that no one can bring so many majorettes and drummers on to the streets as the Left. The journalists, including Louis Paul Boon, an author nominated for the Nobel Prize, went to the buildings of Het Licht (The Light) every morning and crouched behind the typewriters. The building, constructed from plans by Fernand Brunfaut in 1930, was restored to its former glory in 1997 and presents a very light facade.
The theatre café, appropriately named 'Backstage', is housed in the building, and nowadays in the adjoining rooms many young girls from Ghent take their first ballet lessons.
