Museum Voor Schone Kunsten
(
Do not miss
)
Old and new stare each other in the face: the Museum of Fine Art is directly opposite the City Museum of Contemporary Art
(S.M.A.K.), which is ideal for anyone who wants to spend the day among first-class works of art. The building is darker and
gloomier than S.M.A.K.'s, but as far as the collection is concerned the museums are well matched. The oldest works are by
Hiëronymous Bosch and the chronology progresses via Rubens, Brueghel the Younger, Frans Hals and an immensely moving canvas
by Géricault. You arrive at the 20th century with Kokoschka and an important collection of etchings by the Ostend artist James
Ensor.
