This is the oldest house on the River Leie. It was built in 1200 and is a typical example of Romanesque bourgeois architecture. Spijkeren means to store goods and this was the place where grain was kept until it was offered for sale on the Korenmarkt. The Calvinists had their university here until they fled, driven out by fanatical Catholics. The building served as a student house until well into the 20th century. Nowadays beers are tapped competently here and the level of the pub itself is an indication of how much lower the streets were in the Middle Ages.
