Only two small sections remain standing of the 14km city walls that Ghent once had. One of them is the Rabot, a fortified sluice. Most visitors get to see this showpiece at the end of a boat trip. When the locks under the towers were opened it was possible to flood 15sq km of the surrounding land: an ideal strategy for slowing the advance of the enemy. Forty thousand Austrians discovered that the strategy worked.
The Rabot lost its military function a long time ago and it has since been an inn, a warehouse, electricity sub-station, nesting and breeding site for doves - the list could go on. These days the building can be hired by anyone who wants to entertain lavishly in an unusual location.
