Veldstraat
( Worth Seeing ) This long street is the most important one for shopping and all the large chains do their best to make it look exactly like any other western shopping street. On Saturdays you can almost walk on the heads of the crowds. At the junction with Volderstraat, however, you can find several shops that look just as they did a hundred years ago: the exquisite cigar and fountain-pen shop Caron, the celebrated pâtisserie Bloch and the (in the main French-speaking) bookshop Herkenrath which has often been visited in the past by prominent writers. These are also the only shops with people living above them. At the rear of Veldstraat, along the Leie, there are a number of Chinese tea houses that, at the time of the belle époque, were frequented by ladies dressed up to go shopping. Address: Veldstraat Restaurant: Snack bars and pubs in the street (Inexpensive) Bus: Tram 12, 41 Accessible: Very good Other: Museum Arnold Vander Haeghen |
