Boats were towed through the canals, using the tow-paths, by horses because the many bridges in the Ghent basin made sailing impossible for vessels with masts. The tow-paths made it possible for the skippers to lower their masts. Some parts of the paths have been preserved and some have even been resurfaced. This has given visitors the opportunity to walk along beside the River Leie.
The best-preserved part of the tow-paths is by the Vleeshuis and from there you can walk to Sleepstraat and beyond. Look out for a wooden beam at the steps by the Grasbrug - this is where the tow-ropes used to be attached.
