The first thing you see if you arrive by train, apart from the station designed by Louis Cloquet, is the Maria Hendrikaplein. For four years this square was a building site, but in the spring of 2000 the work was finally completed and the square took on its new look. Meeting is the subject of a huge sculpture by Paul van Gijsegem: two bronzes rise from the plinth, symbolising the Leie and the Scheldt rivers. People usually meet each other in this square with its ring of trees, its ice-cream sellers and its comfortable benches.
